Patti Ohlund
While studying at the Universität Stuttgart through the Study Abroad Program, I met many good friends and developed lasting relationships. I returned to Oregon in 1975 and became a camera woman at KGW TV in Portland, Oregon while studying in the evenings for my 1st class Communications License, which I received that year.

Europe "called" me back in 1976 and I have remained here since. I "jobbed" throughout Europe: as a sales girl in Switzerland, ski instructor in Austria, and worked as a camera woman with the Bavarian TV station in Munich.  I decided to become a carpenter and completed my journeyman degree in cabinet making in 1983 in Munich, moved to Berlin and married a man I met while studying in Stuttgart.

Since that time, we have experienced "Hautnah" the Fall of the Berlin Wall, reunification of Germany, and the dropping of state border controls within the European Union.

Our children were born in 1986 and 1988 (Jeffrey and Stephanie). They were raised a bilingual / bicultural environment; attended the John-F.-Kennedy Schule in Zehlendorf and received both their High School diplomas as well as their German Abiturs. Jeffrey is studying International Business in New Jersey, USA and Stephanie is studying Interior Architecture in Canterbury, England. My husband Bernd Wippler is an architect and designs/builds apartments here in Berlin.

While in Berlin, I've worked in many areas: carpentry, antique furniture restorer, foreign language secretary, and office manager. In 2000, I was hired by the Internal Revenue Service at the US Embassy as a Translating Assistant, and later became a Taxpayer Service Specialist (Bilingual) for national and international tax laws and Double Taxation Treaties. My office was moved to Frankfurt in 2005, but I continued with the US Embassy in Berlin working as a Document Control Specialist for the Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO), which is responsible for the construction of the new Chancery.  Since April 2007, I have been working with the US Embassy - Management as a Move Coordinator, responsible for the coordination and scheduling of the Embassy move into the new Chancery at Brandenburger Gate - planned move date: May 2008.

In the evenings, I draft for my husband (CAD - computer assisted drafting), design and create jewelry / furniture in my "little" workshop, and sail. I am a member of the American International Yacht Club in Berlin (AIYCB) and was Commodore from 2001 - 2003.

I've been living in Zurich for about two years and working as an actuary at one of the many insurance companies here.  My summer intensive German course at UO has come in very handy.  Although the locals speak a very different dialect, almost all speak High German (and here in Zurich, English), too.  Most Swiss are delighted (amazed) that an American would make an effort to learn German.  I'd love to hear from other alumni here.

Yet, the town has plenty to offer in terms of cultural life, activities and restaurants. We commute to Stockholm, where we both work in our companies. Any Duck who's visiting Stockholm is very welcome to contact me - for a guided tour of the city or just for a cup of coffee.

Kian Beng Foo
It has been a great 10 years since graduating from UO. I have pursued a career in marketing ever since the completion of my degree with a concentration in Finance and Marketing and have been given many opportunities in the multi-national organizations that I have worked for i.e. Sara Lee, Coca Cola, Johnson & Johnson and currently McDonald's. This year in 2007, I have been blessed tremendously as I was promoted to
Marketing Director for McDonald's Malaysia. A very challenging but extremely exciting role to be in with such a fantastic organization. Many thanks to my business school instructors at the Charles Lundquist College of Business such as Dave Dusseau and Peter Mills who have helped shape my thinking and philosophies.

On the personal front, I'm happily married with a 3 year old boy, Zach who seems to have the makings of a rock star drummer and race car driver. My wife, Jo is starting the first cupcake bakery in Malaysia, called Cupcake Chic (http://cupcakechic.com.my/), capitalizing on an emerging cupcake trend in the country after popular references to the cupcake mania in the US. Of course, I intend to build a brand equity within Cupcake Chic that is going to amass a brand value that will propel her business to major franchising opportunities in Malaysia and within the Asian region. That's the plan, anyway.

The stage that was set in 2007 would hopefully pave a bigger 2008 for us. And I sincerely hope that 2008will be a fantastic year for all my friends and fellow students at the UO. God bless you.

Ekko Morita
After my graduation in 2004, I moved to Hawaii to get a job.  After 4 days arriving to the little island in the middle of Pacific Ocean, I got a job at one of the biggest timeshare companies in the industry.  Since I was an international student and didn't have a green card, I needed to get a sponsorship from my company to work in the U.S. and they did sponsor me to get a working visa. I worked as an International Member Specialist for 3 years to market our business to people in Japan who want to own timeshare resorts in the U.S. (mostly in Hawaii).  I was having a great time in Hawaii, but those 7 years I lived by myself being apart from my family, I missed them so much and also was looking for better opportunity for my career.  This past April 2007, at the perfect timing, my company promoted me as a Quality Assurance Manager in the brand new Osaka, Japan branch. Osaka was my so-lovely-hometown so I took the role.  It's been 7 months since I came back, and I still encounter culture shock-backs in every day life, but I'm enjoying them to the fullest. The new office is only 5 minutes away from my parents' house in the city so luckily I don't have any problem with the crazy crazy Japanese traffic rush hours. I use my knowledge about American business that I learned at UO business school and my working experiences that I gained in Hawaii, and now I try to unite two cultures into one to meet our company's global goals.  I'm having a wonderful time with new co-workers at work, and it's so nice to be back home being with my family. The only sad thing is that I cannot watch Ducks games live on TV! (I watch it on ESPN as Replay or even worse, as Digest after knowing the game results) I wanna hear from my classmates! :-)
