The next five years, I edited an English business monthly for Toyo Keizai Inc. Ms. Lesley Bremner Bell
Following my MBA at the UO in 1994/1995, I continued working in Portland for another 5 years with WebMD following a crazy but fabulous venture funded start-up period. My husband and I returned home in 2001 and I have been working in IT Management consulting prior to recently starting my own software development company with two colleagues. My oldest daughter was born in Portland so we talk fondly about both doing a semester (or more) back at the UO. We keep in touch with many US-based MBA friends not to mention a few rowdy friends from Eugene. I have made contact with a couple of alums whom I see listed in the UO International News and also bumped into a "dad" at my daughter's school who was also an alum who recognised by Duck's cap - small world.

Mr. Thomas K. Lwebuga
Originally from Uganda, I now live and work in Portland, Oregon. I work for Nike as the Finance Reporting Manager. I have been at Nike for almost 8 years now. Time just flies by! I am married to a beautiful UO alum Kendra Lwebuga, who is a graduate from the school of Architecture. We make Portland our home. Kendra and I are involved in a giving back to the community of Matale where I grew up. We have been helping a St. Andrews Matale Senior Secondary School to build infrastructure to giving HIV/AIDS orphans a chance at an education. The school has about 400 kids more than half are orphaned. I volunteer with the Harambee Centre that has helped us tremendously to make this project work. Harambee spearheaded the set up of a sister school relationship between St. Andrews Matale, and Southridge High School in Beaverton. This collaboration has yielded many benefits both in Uganda and in Beaverton. Last year we rebuilt a classroom block for Matale. We have set up a computer lab, and we are in the middle of fundraising to set up science labs (Physics, Chemisty, Bilogy & Agriculture labs) for the school. This last summer Jackie Goldrick the president of the Harambee Centre and I led a group of ten people on a trip to Uganda and spent a great two weeks in the community of Matale. The trip included teachers and students of Southridge. The lives of the students were impacted in a very positive but powerful way. Young people in both schools are talking to each other now. Harambee worked with Southridge teachers to develop a curriculum on Uganda and Africa that all the 9th graders at Southridge now go-through. It is amazing to be involved in something that touches young people in the two communities that I call home (Uganda - ancestral home & Oregon - adopted home). The sister school relationship is catching on and attracting a lot of attention. The Harambee Centre is working with West Linn High School to establish a sister school relationship and the curriculum with a school in Kenya. This seems to have tremendous potential to open eyes and ears of young people, and widen their world. It is amazing to visit with students at both schools, and see their faces and reactions when they open and read a letter from their pen pal on the other side of the world. Maybe one person at a time, if the young people are exposed to each other, to learn from each, the world might be a little more peaceful when it is their turn to taken up prominent leadership roles in our world. You can see some of the photos and work of the Harambee Centre, plus details of the Matale St. Andrews Senior Secondary School project at: www.Harambeecentre.org . On the trip last summer, Julie Resnick a cross-cultural trainer and consultant at Nike came with us. Julie wanted to do a photo voice project with some of the girls we sponsor at the school. So, she gave 12 girls a disposable digital camera and instructed them how to use it. We gave the girls a journal to document each of their pictures. As Julie described the camera to the girls, they liked the word "ZOOM." So, Julie's work took on the name ZoomUganda. You can learn more about Zoom Uganda and these girls lives at: www.ZoomUganda.org . So, on top of a busy schedule at work, my volunteer activities take up the rest of my waking hours. But overall, I am having a blast.

Mr. Kai A. Heidkamp
Here is a short update on the Heidkamps! As you all know we live in a city called Herford (100km west of Hanover) where I have found a job teaching at a small school (English and German). We are expecting our 4th child. It is going to be a girl (that's what the doctors told us) and she will go by the name of Scarlett. Because of this we have decided to leave our very pretty but small house which we are renting and find something bigger. After looking at about a dozen houses we finally found one that suits our needs and signed the contract to buy it. This means we are going to stay here for a while. You better and go find Herford on the map! :) We are very excited and are planning on moving next Spring. The house is from the 1920s and needs some fixing-up.

I then went to the University of Michigan for a Turner Postdoc and have been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities since January 2005. I had a wonderful experience at UO which set the stage for my subsequent experiences and career. I am often thinking back to Eugene, Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest, the University of Oregon, and the fun and interesting people I have met there, including, of course my wife, Amy, an Oregonian, who received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from UO and who is now a Spanish Literature faculty member here at the University of Minnesota. I came back to my country, Guatemala, and since I´ve been teaching at the Del Valle of Guatemala University at the music departament. I also worked (not anymore) at the Music and Youth Foundation, and I´ve been teaching and writing music curricula for different schools. I´m also working putting the subtitles at the operas presented in Guatemala and two at the Costa Rica opera season. My family is working also in music, as my husband was appointed a courtesy instructor at the UofO at the School of music, he has been working in music arrangements, conducting, playing his two instruments (sax and clarinet), and playing in his three different music ensembles. My children are also doing well in music. The older one is already 15 (we came back in 2000), playing viola (where he started with Franklin Alvarez doctoral student at the UofO), and electric bass. He also sings (he sang at the Oregon Children´s Choir for the last year), and plays the piano pretty well (he was in the piano program of the School also.) My daughter plays the piano and sings, but not currently. She rather paint and draw. She was 6 when we came back. We all miss our activities at the University and at Eugene, but we are doing great here in our country.
