The University of Oregon

The University of Oregon is located in Eugene, Oregon, a city of approximately 146,000 people. The university campus, about 110 hectares with fifty buildings, is located within walking distance of the city’s main business district. The climate in Eugene is mild. Winter temperatures are moderate (generally 0 to 12 degrees C), and summers are cool (15 to 32 degrees C). The annual rainfall is about 117 centimeters, with the heaviest rainfall during November, December, and January. Occasionally, there is some snow in the winter.

Average enrollment at the University of Oregon is about 20,000 students during the academic year from September to June. International students comprise approximately 8 percent of the university’s student population.

Applying for Admission

Inquiries concerning graduate admission should be made directly to an academic department, not the Graduate School or the Office of Admissions. Click here for more information about applying for admission to the UO Graduate School.

Many of the academic departments have online application materials. If the department does not yet have online application materials, contact the department directly. You will find an email link on the department website. The application and financial statement should be completed and returned with required fees, according to the instructions of the department.

English Language Proficiency

Admission to the University of Oregon as an international student requires demonstration of English language proficiency if your native language is not English. Click here for more details. Academic departments often have additional admission requirements. Click here for departmental admission requirements for graduate students.

If you have not reached the required English language proficiency at the time you apply for admission, you may be granted Conditional Admission to the University. If you have Conditional Admission, you must enroll in the American English Institute (AEI).

Courses of Study

Click here for a list of Graduate Degree Programs at the University of Oregon.

At the University of Oregon, study beyond the bachelor’s degree is administered through the Graduate School. The UO does not offer courses leading to degrees in agriculture, engineering, forestry, or professional home economics. For more information, click here to view the UO catalog.

Academic Calendar

The UO academic calendar is divided into four segments. Fall, winter, and spring terms are each approximately eleven weeks long; summer session offers eight- and eleven-week sessions.

Expenses

Click here for an estimate of the total expenses you may expect for a year of study at the UO.

The estimated expenses are listed for the academic year, which is from September to June. This is a conservative estimate and does not include travel expenses. Tuition and residence-hall payments are due at the beginning of each term. Some departments or colleges (architecture, business, and law) require additional fees.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Information about financial aid and scholarship for international students is available on the IA website.

Information about Graduate Teaching Fellowships (GTF) and other funding resources for graduate students is available on the UO Graduate School website.

Employment

International students on F-1 visas who are maintaining a full time course of study can work on campus (including GTFs) part time (up to 20 hours per week) during the academic year and full time during the summer months and any periods when school is not in session. On campus employment assumes that the work will not interfere with your studies and that you are maintaining good academic standing.

No special permission or document is needed to give you permission to work on campus. However, we highly encourage prospective students to apply for the International Student Work-Study program. Students who receive these awards will be able to seek and compete for on-campus work-study jobs during the academic year. The deadline to apply for this program is in April for the following academic year.

Immigration regulations make it extremely difficult for F-1 students to get permission to work off campus. Dependents of students who enter the U.S. with an F-1 (student) visa are not allowed to work. For more information click here.

Living Accommodations

University Housing will send you application materials and information about the residence halls after you have applied for admission to the university. You should apply as early as possible because space in the residence halls and family housing is limited. Click here for more information about UO Housing.

Arrival and Orientations

Graduate students should contact their academic departments for information about departmental orientations and registration. International Affairs also provides an extensive orientation for international students.

Friendship Foundation for International Students (FFIS)

The Friendship Foundation for International Students (FFIS) is a nonprofit local community organization. FFIS arranges for international students to meet local community members. In this way each student has an opportunity to visit an American home and learn more about U.S. customs and culture. Click here if you are interested in being matched with an FFIS member.
