Employment Information for J-1 Students

The Department of State allows students on J-1 Exchange Visitors to engage in two types of employment. The first type is Academic Training related to one's field of study. The second type is employment related to academic funding, on-campus work or economic necessity.

Permission to work

Whatever type of employment you are considering, U.S. government regulations require you to obtain approval in writing from your J-1 Responsible Officer, who represents your J-1 sponsor and issues your Form DS-2019. Before approval, your J-1 Responsible Officer is obligated to evaluate the proposed employment in the context of your program and personal circumstances and then to decide if it is appropriate.

The University of Oregon's four Responsible/Alternate Responsible Officers are also International Student Advisors in International Affairs (IA). If the University is your program sponsor, you should see one of these Advisors to obtain permission to work. If your program sponsor is an outside agency, you will need to contact the agency for permission to work.
